Find Hazardous Material Commodity Code
Search for the valid commodity code for your hazardous commodity. A
hazardous material (HazMat) commodity code is a 7-digit number that identifies
unique hazardous materials. HazMat commodity codes usually begin with
the number “49” and are standard across the rail industry.
HazMat commodity codes are not related to DOT requirements. They are
used for identifying and tracking hazardous materials during transportation,
and are necessary to the electronic billing process for hazardous materials.
Select the appropriate regulatory authority
HazMat shipping descriptions generally
vary depending on the regulatory authority (or country of origin). Select
the appropriate regulatory authority by clicking on the corresponding
radio button.

Select if multiple or mixed shipments
Use the radio buttons to select multiple
(more than 1 hazardous material commodity) or mixed (1 hazardous commodity
with other non-hazardous commodities).
Enter search criteria
To find the commodity code, enter as
much search criteria as you can. The more criteria you enter, the fewer
the search results you have to look through.
Enter any of the following or any combination:

the UN/NA Number
(e.g. UN1234 or NA1234)
3 or more letters of the shipping name
3 or more letters of the technical name
(be exact as possible)
the 7-digit commodity code,
then click ‘GO.'

Review the descriptions to find the commodity you’re shipping. Click on
a code to select it. This will take you to the Hazardous Materials Details
page, so you can complete required description information.
